Golden Globes 2012 - Review

2012 Golden Globes: Best Dresses

By Cavan Sieczkowski

The 2012 Golden Globe Awards was a night to remember. Hollywood's crème de la crème were out in full force, dressed to the nines on the red carpet and ready to celebrate some of the most noteworthy works of the year. "The Artist," Michel Hazanavicius's acclaimed tale of 1920s Hollywood, proved to be the main winner of the night. It picked up three awards including Best Film (musical or comedy) and Best Actor (musical) for Jean Dujardin. George Clooney clenched Best Actor in a Drama for his performance as a Hawaiian lawyer who attempts to reconnect with his daughters in "The Descendents." Meryl Streep took home the Best Actress in a Drama statue for her role as Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady."

The stars dazzled on the red carpet, with some of the world's most beautiful leading ladies dressed in some of the world's most fabulous fashions. Popular trends of the night included crimson and blush hues, mermaid skirts, glittering bodices, lace and loose waves.

The best-dressed couple of the night was Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Jolie wowed in a silken white and ruby Atelier Versace gown. She had her hair pulled back to reveal sparkling diamonds. She accessorized with a red clutch and scarlet lipstick. Harper Bazaar's Derek Blasberg tweeted, "I think Angelina Jolie just single handedly made it cool to match your bag and your lipstick to your dress again."

Supermodel and "Project Runway" host Heidi Klum looked ravishing in a Calvin Klein gown and turquoise Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, bringing some color to the Golden Globes. "I really wanted something with a super sexy, elegant silhouette. I went with a custom Calvin Klein Collection bisque silk crepe sheath dress with a plunging back and paired it with a gorgeous turquoise statement necklace from Lorraine Schwartz," Klum wrote on the AOL blog.

Charlize Theron, in pink Dior, and Michelle Williams both sported headbands on the red carpet. Theron's accented a side messy-bun and Williams' topped her pixie cut. Williams, dressed in a midnght blue Jason Wu gown, took home the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her role as Marilyn Monroe in "My Week With Marilyn."

Zooey Deschanel, who is nominated for her role in FOX's "New Girl," rocked a 60s-vibe in a haute couture Prada gown with sparkling lime green bodice and brown skirt. Her nails were painted with mini tuxedos and her hair was styled in a bouffant coif. Learn how to do Deschanel's adorable nail art here.

Claire Danes was a major stand-out of the night dressed in a black and white J. Mendel dress with open-back and black latticed detailing. The stunner topped her look with red lipstick and simple diamond jewels. She took home the award for Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama for her role in "Homeland."
Embodying a black widow sexiness, Rooney Mara, star of "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," dressed in black Nina Ricci with mermaid skirt and front, side and back cut-outs. The plunging V-neck adds extra sensuality. The actress said that she kept some of the piercings she had to get for the film, just in a case a sequel is in the works she will not have to re-pierce anything. Mara has been one of the most sought-after actress as of late. All eyes were on her at this year's Golden Globes.

"Modern Family" actress Sofia Vergara wore a dark blue Vera Wang dress. She said that she chooses Wang regularly because the clothes fit her so well. She was joined on stage with co-star Julie Bowen, who opted for a prim look - a blush tulle Reem Acra dress with glittering cap sleeves. "I didn't even wear a gown at my wedding. So I'm having my girl moment," she told Ryan Seacrest.

Nicole Richie wore a shimmering, silver Julien Macdonald dress and carrying a House of Harlow clutch. Richie will star in the upcoming NBC series "Fashion Show." Richie, who is a fashion mogul herself, is thrilled. She stars alongside Jessica Simspon. "We are really like a big family. It's been a lot of fun."

George Clooney and girlfriend Stacy Keibler arrived after a romantic vacation in Cabo. Keibler went with a crimson Valentino column gown with draped cowl neck and up-swept hair. Clooney looked Old Hollywood chic in a black tuxedo and bow tie. The couple said they cannot wait for the after-parties. As for their fun date night, they usually opt for dinner. "We like to do sushi," said Keibler.
